Insights from Analysis of 2024-25 NBA Injury Data
Across the 2024-25 season of the NBA, injury data parsed from Pro Sports Transaction and player statistics acquired from Basketball Reference reveals several key patterns:
- Minutes Vs. Injuries: Players with higher minutes per game tend to miss more days due to injuries. Interestingly, the number of injuries does not always correlate with time lost -- as seen in Dashboards 1 and 2.
- Injury Types: We also see a staggering amount of injuries involve knees and ankles - LaMelo Ball, for instance, leads ankle injuries with a count of 7 reported incidents (Dashboard 3).
- Contextual Factors: Increasing the minutes played per game (MP) slider uncovers a pattern of top players sustaining these injuries, but one can also draw conclusions from other confounding variables such as age, team position (starter vs. bench warmer), and injury history as likely factors in a player's injury risk.
- Draft Strategy: How often a player gets injured shouldn't be the deciding factor when it comes to drafting a player -- let's take Jayson Tatum as an example. Due to team strategy like load management, we see star players resting for a few games here and there. However, when you look at his performance during the 2024-25 season, he's a solid Top 10 performer. Rather, we should look at a multitude of statistics, from time spent injured to roster changes, to minutes played per game as strong variables in selecting a reliable and efficient player for your team.
